Officials at Consol Energy have told employees the company is expected to reopen its idled Buchanan County Coal Mine near Mavisdale by January, but it’s still waiting for regulators to allow it to reopen. Production at the mine was idled in July after a roof collapse damaged ventilation controls inside. No injuries were reported. About 450 people work at the mine, which was closed for several months in 2005 because of a fire. In October, Consol submitted a re-entry plan to federal and Virginia regulators for review and comment. The federal Mine Safety and Health Administration must give approval before workers are allowed back into the mine.
