The state’s plan to reintroduce elk in Southwest Virginia has drawn opposition from another county. The Tazewell County Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution opposing the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries’ proposal to reintroduce elk in Buchanan, Dickensen and Wise counties. Bedford County’s Board of Supervisors approved a similar resolution last month. While neither county is part of the plan, county and agricultural officials are concerned that elk could migrate into the counties, bringing disease and destroying crops. Tazewell County Supervisor Mike Hymes says elk can’t read county border signs.
