A BOOK THAT’S BEEN ON THE HIGH SCHOOL READING LIST IN ABINGDON VIRGINIA FOR A DECADE IS STIRRING SOME CONTROVERSY. SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER DAYTON OWENS FILED A MOTION DURING A RECENT SCHOOL BOARD MEETING TO HAVE AUTHOR LEE SMITH’S BOOK, “FAIR AND TENDER LADIES” REMOVED FROM THE READING LIST. OWENS REFUSED TO COMMENT ON SPECIFICS OF THE ISSUE. THE SCHOOL BOARD VOTED TO CONTINUE TO INCLUDE THE BOOK IN THE APPROVED SUPPLEMENTARY READING LIST ON THE CONDITION A COMMITTEE REVIEW IT IN RESPONSE TO THE COMPLAINT.
