Kingsport police say Officer Thomas Wayt — who has been on the city force for seven years — is on administrative leave after fatally shooting a man while responding to a domestic violence call. City spokesman Tim Whaley identified the officer, but said he couldn’t discuss details of the incident because it was being investigated by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. The leave is routine protocol in an officer-involved shooting. Perry Long, who was 40, was fatally shot Saturday afternoon. Police Chief Gale Osborne said Long pointed a handgun at Wayt, who then shot him. Osborne said a young child of the couple who lived at the home where the shooting occurred wasn’t harmed, but the woman had been beaten and ran outside.
