An East Tennessee plant that processes nuclear fuel for U.S. Navy vessels is suspending most manufacturing while it makes safety improvements. Nuclear Fuel Services in Erwin is suspending production operations and the down blending of highly enriched uranium into fuel for TVA power plants. Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman Joey Ledford said Thursday the oversight agency has had an inspection team at the plant for several weeks. Ledford said the agency will tell NFS next week what the company must do to restart idled operations. The plant is owned by Lynchburg-based Babcock & Wilcox Company.
