A 41-year-old sex offender has pleaded not guilty for failing to register as a sex offender after authorities say the man was on the run with a 14-year-old Surgoinsville girl for two weeks before being captured in Smyth County, Virginia. Federal prosecutors obtained a multi-purpose, one-count indictment on Tuesday against Benjamin Shook.Shook and the girl were taken into custody on July 6, 14 days after the girl left her Hawkins County home. A mental evaluation has been ordered for Shook. Prosecutors can return to the grand jury at a later date to pursue additional charges.
