An attorney for Unicoi County says the jail had no medical staff on duty when an inmate died there from an overdose. The admission came in response to a $2 million wrongful-death lawsuit filed by Nathan Silvers’ daughter. The 38-year-old Silvers was arrested by Erwin police after he was found passed out in his vehicle. Silvers told the officer he had injected four muscle relaxants. The suit says Silvers was conscious when he was incarcerated but died hours later in his cell. Despite the court filings, Unicoi County Sheriff Mike Hensley told the paper the jail has always had medical staff. He would not explain the discrepancy between his statements and those of the county’s attorney.
