Archaeologists say they have discovered what they believe to be a Native American village near the site where a new bridge is being built over the Nolichucky River in Greene County. Matt Gage, senior archaeologist with the University of Tennessee Archaeological Research Laboratory, told the Greeneville Sun that they have found evidence of food storage facilities, pottery fragments and evidence of tool-making. The newspaper reported Saturday that Gage estimated the village dates back 2,000 to 3,000 years.
