CARTER COUNTY RESCUE TEAMS HAVE WORKED OVERNIGHT TO BRING A STRANDED HIKER TO SAFETY. THEY RECEIVED A CALL YESTERDAY AFTERNOON SAYING A MAN WAS INJURED ON THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL NEAR THE VANDERVENDER SHELTER IN STONEY CREEK. EMERGENCY CREWS REACHED THE MAN LATE YESTERDAY AND ATTEMPTED TO BRING HIM OUT USING SEVERAL FOUR WHEELERS. BUT OFFICIALS PLAN TO CARRY THE MAN FIVE MILES ACROSS AND DOWN ROUGH MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN THIS MORNING. THE EXTENT OF HIS INJURIES ARE UNKNOWN, BUT ITS BELIEVED TO BE A PROBLEM WITH HIS ANKLE OR LEG.
