THE GREENE COUNTY COMMISSION IS STUDYING OPTIONS TO RELIEVE OVERCROWDING AT THE COUNTY DETENTION CENTER. COUNTY LEADERS HAVE UNTIL DECEMBER 3RD TO PRESENT A PLAN TO THE TENNESEEE CORRECTIONS INSTITUTE OR FACE LOSING CERTIFICATION OF THE JAIL. THE COUNTY COMMISSION IS CONSIDERING SEVERAL OPTIONS, INCLUDING BUILDING A NEW SITE AT THE INTERSECTION OF HIGHWAY 11E AND HAL HENARD ROAD OR RAZING A BANK BUILDING NEXT TO THE CURRENT JAIL TO BUILD A NEW ADDITION. JAIL EXPERT AND ARCHITECT DAVID WRIGHT RECOMMENDED BUILDING A NEW 65 MILLION DOLLAR, 280-THOUSAND SQUARE FOOT, 192 BED JAIL ON A NEW SITE. NO ACTION WAS TAKEN AND THE NEXT MEETING IS SET FOR NOVEMBER 10TH.
