Voters were lined up by the hundreds today as polls opened for the 2008 Presidential race between Democratic Senator Barack Obama and Republican Senator John McCain. Locally, Sullivan County voters have a US Senate and a US House race to vote for. In the US Senate race, Democrat Robert Tuke is squaring off against Republican challanger and former Tennesseee Governor Lamar Alexander. In the US House of Representative race, the Republican Mayor of Johnson City Phil Roe is opposed by Democrat Rob Russell and Independent Joel Goodman. Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey of Blountville, a Republican, is facing off against Democrat Bill Jones in the Tennessee Senate 2nd Senatorial District race. In the Tennessee House first representative district race, incumbent Republican Jon Lundbert is being challenged by Democrat Michael Surgenor. Democrat incumbent Nathan Vaughn of Kingsport is squaring off against challenger Tony Shipley, a Republican, for Tennessee’ Second district house contest. And incumbent Jason Mumpower, a Republican, is running unoposed for Tennessee’s 3rd House representative seat. Polls in Tennessee are open this evening until 8 o’clock.
