Elections officials say the number of early voters in Tennessee has surpassed one million. State elections coordinator Brook Thompson said 1.1 million people had voted in the 2008 presidential race by Monday evening. He expects that number to surpass the record for early voters of 1.3 million set in the 2004 presidential election. There are 3.9 million registered voters in the state and Thursday is the last day to vote early in Tennessee. Thompson said turnout is highest in Shelby, Davidson and suburban counties around Nashville and Memphis including Rutherford, Williamson, Fayette and Tipton counties. Although lines may be long, Thompson said the wait is 15 minutes to an hour at most polling places. Many counties have extended their polling hours to accommodate for the influx of people in the final day before the election.
