NINE OF 11 PEOPLE CHARGED IN A PROTEST LAST MONTH AT THE COAL-FIRED POWER PLANT IN WISE COUNTY VIRGINIA HAVE ENTERED GUILTY PLEAS. HOWEVER, THEY WILL SPEND NO TIME BEHIND BARS. UNDER THE AGREEMENT, THE PROTESTERS PLED GUILTY TO CRIMINAL TRESPASS AND PARTICIPATING IN AN UNLAWFUL ASSEMBLY. EACH WAS SENTENCED TO 30 DAYS OF JAIL TIME WHICH WAS SUSPENDED. EACH MUST PAY A 200 DOLLAR FINE, 200 DOLLARS IN RESTITUTION TO THE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE, AND COMPLETE 25 HOURS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE. ON SEPTEMBER 15TH, THE MOSTLY OUT OF STATE PROTESTERS LOCKED THEMSELVES TO STEEL DRUMS AT THE SITE WHERE DOMINION VIRGINIA POWER IS CONSTRUCTING THE CONTROVERSIAL PLANT. THE OTHER TWO PROTESTERS HAD TO GO TO WORK, AND ARE EXPECTED TO PLEAD GUILTY DURING A HEARING SET FOR LATER IN THE MONTH.
