Knoxville police have identified the alleged gunman and victim in a shooting at a crowded shopping mall. Police say 29-year-old Ahmed Nahl (AH’-med NOLL’) died at Knoxville Center Mall yesterday. Charged with murder is 42-year-old William Johnson of Knoxville. He was injured in an exchange of gunfire with police and was taken to University of Tennessee Medical Center, where he’s in stable condition. Johnson is also charged with aggravated kidnapping and two counts of attempted murder. The two officers involved in the gunfire were put on paid leave pending an nvestigation, as is standard procedure. Nahl was an employee of a clothing store at the mall. Witnesses say the gunfire sent people “stampeding” for cover.
