OFFICIALS AT ONE NORTHEAST TENNESSEE CAMPUS ARE CONTINUING TO TAKE STEPS TO MAKE THE FACILITY A SAFER ONE. EAST TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY IN JOHNSON CITY IS INSTALLING NEW EMERGENCY PHONES ON CAMPUS AS PART OF THE UNIVERSITY’S FOUR-PRONGED APPROACH TO SECURITY CONCERNS THAT HAVE RECENTLY ARISEN OUT OF SUCH EVENTS AS THE TRAGEDY LAST YEAR AT VIRGINIA TECH WHERE 32 PEOPLE WERE SHOT TO DEATH. ACCORDING TO BILL RASNICK, ETSU’S VICE PRESIDENT OF FACILITIES, THERE WILL EVENTUALLY BE 50 NEW EMERGENCY PHONES ON CAMPUS. THIS PAST YEAR, ETSU RECEIVED A BUDGET OF HALF A MILLION DOLLARS TO UPGRADE CAMPUS SECURITY MEASURES. SO THE SCHOOL HAS INSTALLED EMERGENCY ALERT SIRENS AND SECURITY CAMERAS PLACED NEAR CAMPUS BUILDINGS.
