TO STEP UP DWI AND SPEED ENFORCEMENTS EFFORTS IN SELECTED AREAS IN WASHINGTON COUNTY VIRGINIA, THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE WILL USE MONEY FROM A GRANT TO PAY SOME OFF-DUTY DEPUTIES. ACCORDING TO SHERIFF FRED NEWMAN, FUNDING OF 34-THOUSAND DOLLARS WILL COME FROM THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC ADMINISTRATION. WITH THE FUNDING, NEWMAN SAID 20-THOUSAND DOLLARS HAS BEEN EARMARKED FOR DWI AND TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT, WHILE THE REMAINING FUNDS WILL BE USED TO PURCHASE IN-CAR CAMERAS AND ALCO-SENSORS. THE SHERIFF ADDED THAT SPEEDING AND EXCESSIVE USE OF ALCOHOL WHILE DRIVING ARE TWO OF THE PRIMARY CAUSES OF TRAFFICE FATALITIES ON THE HIGHWAYS. CERTAIN AREAS WHERE THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE HAS RECEIVED COMPLAINTS OF SPEEDING AND RECKLESS DRIVING WILL BE TARGETED FOR ENFORCEMENT EFFORTS.
