OFFICIALS WITH THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AND ALPHA NATURAL RESOURCES ARE PREDICTING, THE FIRST SECTION OF THE PROPOSED COALFIELDS EXPRESSWAY COULD BE COMPLETED IN ABOUT TWO YEARS. THE TWO SIGNED AN AGREEMENT FOR THE FINAL DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE TWO MILE HAWK’S NEST PORTION OF THE PROPOSED 51-MILE ROUTE. THE PROJECT AREA IS JUST WEST OF GRUNDY IN BUCHANAN COUNTY. THE EXPRESSWAY IS A 2.8 BILLION DOLLAR PROJECT THAT WILL EXTEND A FOUR LANE ROAD FROM POUND IN WISE COUNTY ACROSS DICKENSON AND BUCHANAN COUNTIES TO THE WEST VIRGINIA LINE.
