RESEARCHERS WITH THE VIRGINIA CENTER FOR COAL AND ENERGY ARE PREPARING TO TEST A TECHNOLOGY IN RUSSELL COUNTY VIRGINIA TODAY THAT COULD ALLOW CARBON DIOXIDE TO BE STORED UNDERGROUND INSTEAD OF RELEASED INTO THE AIR. THE TWO MONTH LONG TEST WILL INJECT ONE THOUSAND TONS OF CARBON DIOXIDE INTO UNMINABLE COAL SEAMS. RESEARCHERS ARE HOPEFUL THE TECHNOLOGY CAN BE USED TO REDUCE AND STORE GREENHOUSE GAS EMMISSIONS BY POWER PLANTS AND IN OTHER COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS.
