MEMBERS OF THE 278TH ARMORED CAVALRY REGIMENT COULD BE HEADED TO AFGHANISTAN RATHER THAN IRAQ. THAT ACCORDING TO THE COMMANDER OF THE TENNESSEE NATIONAL GUARD. COLONEL JEFF HOLMES SAID ALTHOUGH THERE ISN’T ANY OFFICIAL NOTICE TO THAT EFFECT, HE STILL BELIEVES THE TROOPS COULD BE HEADED THERE NEXT SPRING. THE 278TH RETURNED HOME TO THE VOLUNTEER STATE IN NOVEMBER 2005 AFTER SPENDING A YEAR IN IRAQ. THE UNIT WAS PLACED ON ALERT EARLIER THIS YEAR BUT HASN’T BEEN MOBILIZED SO FAR.
