A man charged with unleashing terror on a Sunday morning church service in Knoxville has waived a preliminary hearing. Jim D. Adkisson is an out-of-work truck driver accused of opening fire on July 27 at Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, killing two and wounding six. Police said he targeted the church because of its liberal leanings. In waiving the hearing, Adkisson’s defense attorney, Mark Stephens, said he is eager for the case to reach the criminal court level as quickly as possible so resources will be available to evaluate his client’s mental condition. He said that can’t happen under Tennessee rules before then. A first-degree murder warrant against the 58-year-old Adkisson will now go to a grand jury, which is likely to return additional charges.
