WITH WATER PROBLEMS HOPEFULLY BEHIND IT, THE TOWN OF GRUNDY VIRGINIA IS READY FOR A REBIRTH. A FLOOD WALL HAS BEEN COMPLETED, SO THE TOWN IS LEFT PROTECTED BY A GATE THAT WILL BE CLOSED IF WATER GETS TOO HIGH AND BEGINS TO COME INTO THE TOWN. THROUGH A NEVER-BEFORE PARTNERSHIP WITH THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AND THE U.S. ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS, THE COMMUNITY OF ABOUT ONE THOUSAND RESIDENTS IS NEARING COMPLETION OF A BRAND NEW, FLOOD-PROOF DOWNTOWN COMPLETE WITH A HIGHWAY. THE NEW CHANGES ARE A WELCOMED. IN 1977, THE TOWN SUFFERED A MASSIVE FLOOD WHEN 16 INCHES OF RAIN FELL IN ONE DAY UPSTREAM. THE FLOOD NOT ONLY DROWNED THE PHYSICAL DOWNTOWN BUT ALSO THE TOWN’S ECONOMY. VDOT HAS BUILT A NEW ROAD THROUGH THE TOWN AND IS PRESENTLY WORKING ON THE INTERSECTION OF U.S. HIGHWAY 460 AND STATE ROUTE 83.
