AFTER SIX YEARS, MULTIPLE ATTORNEYS AND DOZENS OF MOTIONS, ACCUSED DOUBLE MURDERER HOWARD HAWK WILLIS IS NO CLOSER TO GOING TO TRIAL THAN HE WAS IN 2002. WILLIS WAS SCHEDULED TO STAND TRIAL NEXT WEEK IN WASHINGTON COUNTY TENNESSEE CRIMINAL COURT BUT THE TENNESSEE COURT OF CRIMINAL APPEALS HAS HALTED THE TRIAL TO ALLOW TIME TO REVIEW WILLIS’ CLAIM THAT HE CAN’T REPRESENT HIMSELF. JUDGE LYNN BROWN ORDERED WILLIS TO BE HIS OWN COUNSEL AFTER GOING THROUGH NEARLY A DOZEN ATTORNEYS. SO, THE FUTURE OF A TRIAL FOR WILLIS NOW DEPENDS ON THE OUTCOME OF THIS LATEST APPEAL. WILLIS FACES THE DEATH PENALTY IF CONVICTED IN THE OCTOBER 2002 KILLINGS OF TEENAGERS SAMANTHA LEMING AND ADAM CHRISMER. THEIR BODIES WERE FOUND IN CONTAINERS AT A DOWNTOWN STORAGE WAREHOUSE. THERE IS NO TIME FRAME SET AS TO WHEN A RULING WILL BE HANDED DOWN BY THE APPELLATE COURT.
