Construction is under way on Dominion Virginia Power’s $1.8 billion coal-fired power plant in Wise county Virginia. Dominion began construction Monday afternoon on the 585-megawatt power plant. The utility says nearly 1,000 jobs will be created during the four-year construction period. The state Department of Environmental Quality issued air permits Monday that were approved last week by the state Air Pollution Control Board. The air board reduced emission limits recommended by the DEQ for sulfur dioxide and mercury, but environmentalists said they plan a court challenge to the plant. Earlier Monday, police arrested 13 activists opposed to the plant after they blocked the entrance to Dominion’s corporate offices in Richmond.
