AN ELIZABETHTON MAN WHOSE FIRST DEGREE MURDER TRIAL ENDED IN A HUNG JURY IS HOPEFUL DNA ON A CIGARETTE BUTT AT THE CRIME SCENE WILL SHED NEW LIGHT ON HIS CASE. 31 YEAR OLD ROGER GREENWELL IS CHARGED WITH FIRST DEGREE MURDER IN THE 2006 BEATING DEATH OF ROBERT PETERSON. HE’S ACCUSED OF BEATING PETERSON OVER MONEY AND DRUGS AT HIS KENTUCKY STREET HOME. A CIGARETTE BUTT WAS FOUND AT THE SCENE OF THE CRIME, BUT WAS NEVER TESTED. A DNA TEST WAS ORDERED IN THE CASE AND GREENWELL TOLD CRIMINIAL COURT JUDGE LYNN BROWN DURING A HEARING YESTERDAY, THAT HE THINKS THE TEST RESULTS WILL BE A DEFINING FACTOR IN THE CASE. THE DEFENSE TOLD THE JUDGE THAT THE PRELIMINARY RESULTS WON’T BARE ANY CHANGE IN THE STATE’S APPROACH TO THE CASE. GREENWELL IS SCHEDULED TO BE BACK IN COURT SEPTEMBER 5TH.
