TWO TRI CITIES ATTORNEYS ARE SEEKING A SEAT ON THE TENNESSEE SUPREME COURT. TWO OF THE SEVEN APPLICANTS INCLUDE ATTORNEYS BRUCE SHINE AND FORMER JOHNSON CITY MAYOR VANCE CHEEK JR. THE VACANCY IS BEING CREATED BY THE RETIREMENT OF TENNESSEE CHIEF JUSTICE WILLIAM BARKER WHO IS RETIRING SEPTEMBER 1ST. THE DEADLINE TO APPLY WAS THIS PAST FRIDAY. THE STATE’S JUDICIAL SELECTION COMMISSION IS SET TO HOLD AN AUGUST 18TH PUBLIC HEARING AND WILL EXAMINE THE CANDIDATES’ BACKGROUNDS BEFORE NARROWING THE APPLICANTS DOWN TO THREE FINALISTS. THE APPOINTEMENT WILL BE THE DEMOCRATIC GOVERNOR’S FOURTH TO THE FIVE MEMBER HIGH COURT.
