AN ENVIROMENTALIST CLAIMS A PROPOSED COAL FIRED POWER PLANT IN WISE COUNTY WOULD CAUSE MORE DAMAGE TO AIR AND WATER QUALITY IN THE GREAT SMOKEY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK. DON BARGER IS THE SENIOR REGIONAL DIRECTOR FOR THE NATIONAL PARKS CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION AND SAID THE AIR QUALITY IN THE SMOKIES IS ALREADY DEGRADED CONSIDERABLY. HE SAID 90 SPECIES OF PLANTS HAVE ALREADY SUFFERED DIRECT DAMAGE AND SOME STREAMS IN THE PARK ARE SO POLLUTED THAT TROUT CAN NO LONGER LIVE IN THEM. THE VIRGINIA GENERAL ASSEMBLY HAS PASSED A LAW THAT DECLARES THE POWER PLANT TO BE CLEAN COAL TECHNOLOGY. MEANWHILE, DOMINION POWER SPOKESMAN DAN GENEST SAID THE PLANT MEETS AND EXCEEDS ENVIORNMENTAL REGULATION DESIGNED TO PROTECT HUMAN HEALTH AND THE ENVIRONMENT.
