A TRI CITIES JAIL HAS BEEN GIVEN A TIMETABLE OF 60 DAYS TO DEAL WITH ITS OVERCROWDING CONDITIONS, OR FACE BEING DE-CERTIFIED. LAST WEEK, A STATE JAIL INSPECTOR PAID AN UNANNOUNCED VISIT TO THE UNICOI COUNTY JAIL AND FOUND 82 INMATES, WHERE THERE IS ONLY CAPACITY FOR 61 INMATES. SINCE THIS ISN’T THE FIRST TIME THE COUNTY HAS BEEN WARNED ABOUT HAVING TOO MANY INMATES, THE INSPECTOR GAVE THE COUNTY TWO MONTHS TO GET A PLAN TOGETHER OF FACE DE-CERITICATION. SHERIFF KENT HARRIS SAYS OFFICIALS PLAN TO CONTINUE WITH THEIR CURRENT PHASE TWO BUILDING PLAN TO ADD SPACE FOR MORE INMATES. WHEN OFFICIALS HAVE A FORMAL PLAN, THEY WILL TURN IT IN TO THE STATE JAIL INSPECTOR. ACCORDING TO THE SHERIFF, ONCE CERTIFICATION IS LOST, IT’S DIFFICULT TO GET IT BACK. NOT HAVING CERITIFCATION WILL OPEN THE COUNTY UP TO LAWSUITS AND HIGHER INSURANCE PREMIUMS, TOO.
