THE U.S. FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION IS CONTINUING TO INVESTIGATE SALMONELLA BELIEVED TO HAVE COME FROM CERTAIN TOMATOES. 145 CASES OF SALMONELLA SAINTPAUL INFECTION HAVE BEEN REPORTED SINCE APRIL, INCLUDING ONE IN SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA. THE FDA IS NOW RECOMMENDING THAT CONSUMERS ONLY PURCHASE RAW RED PLUM, RAW RED ROMA OR RAW RED ROUND TOMATOES GROWN AND HARVESTED IN CERTAIN STATES AND COUNTRIES. THE SPECIFIC CAUSE OR ORIGIN OF THE INFECTIONS IS STILL UNKNOWN. SYMPTOMS INCLUDE DIARRHEA, FEVER AND ABDOMINAL CRAMPS 12 TO 72 HOURS AFTER THE INFECTION.
