Tennessee education officials are considering college tuition increases of between 4 and 9 percent this fall. Board of Regents’ finance committee members met this week in a teleconference and were briefed on budget cuts and discussions with college presidents about tuition and mandatory fee increases. Bob Adams, vice chancellor for business and finance for the board, said the group did not make recommendations, but is expected to at its next meeting June 10. He said the full board is scheduled to meet June 26 to consider tuition and fee increases. University of Tennessee President John Petersen has said he will recommend tuition increases of 6 percent for instate, undergraduate students. As a result of state budget woes, state funding for all four-year universities was reduced by an average of 5.8 percent. The heads of Tennessee’s public colleges and universities told lawmakers in March they’re trying to keep the hikes below 10 percent, despite the poor economy.
