The Mount Carmel traffic cameras don’t blink at initiating speeding citations. Offenders cited so far include one warning and two tickets to state troopers. The new system has also caused four speeding citations to be issued to Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office cars. Mount Carmel Police Chief Jeff Jackson says police can drive above posted speed limits only when they have lights and sirens operating. He says of the police vehicles cited, none did. On Wednesday, a Highway Patrol trooper cited a Mount Pleasant police officer for driving 70 mph in a zone posted for 55 mph. State Safety Department spokesman Mike Browning said the Patrol will pay the speeding fines.
