AN ABINGDON VIRGINIA MAN IS BEHIND BARS AFTER LEADING LOCAL AUTHORITIES ON A CHASE THAT RESULTED IN HIS EVENTUAL CAPTURE. AN OFF-DUTY ABINGDON POLICE OFFICER SPOTTED 51 YEAR OLD MICHAEL HENRY BARRETT, WHO HAD OUTSTANDING WARRANTS FOR ATTEMPTED MALICIOUS WOUNDING AND DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY. BARREETT LED POLICE ON A CHASE FOR APPROXIMATELY TWO MILES OUT OF TOWN. HE EVENTUALLY LOST CONTROL OF HIS VEHICLE WHICH LANDED IN A CULVERT. BARRETT WAS TRANSPORTED TO JOHNSTON MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. IN ADDITION TO THE PREVIOUS CHARGES, BARRETT IS CHARGED WITH ASSAULT ON A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER, ELUDING POLICE, OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE, AND RECKLESS DRIVING. HE IS CURRENTLY BEING HELD IN THE SOUTHWEST REGIONAL JAIL IN ABINGDON UNDER BOND OF 25-THOUSAND DOLLARS.
