A MINE COLLAPSE IN WISE COUNTY VIRGINIA HAS CLAIMED THE LIFE OF A COUNTY MAN. AUTHORITIES SAID 61 YEAR OLD DAVID SIZEMORE WAS KILLED YESTERDAY IN THE ACCIDENT AT OSAKA MINE CORPORTATION’S MINE #1 NEAR APPALACHIA VIRGINIA. OFFICIALS WITH THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF MINES, MINERALS AND ENERGY SAID SIZEMORE AND MARTY MUSICK WERE STANDING UNDER A BOLTED MINE ROOF WHEN IT COLLAPSED. SIZEMORE WAS AIRLIFTED TO A KINGSPORT HOSPITAL WHERE HE DIED A SHORT TIME LATER. MUSICK WAS TREATED AT A HOSPITAL IN BIG STONE GAP AND LATER RELEASED. THIS MARKS THE FIRST MINING DEATH IN VIRGINIA SINCE OCTOBER 2004 AND THE FIRST ROOF FALL FATALITY SINCE MARCH 2001. SIZEMORE’S BODY HAS BEEN SENT TO THE MEDICAL EXAMINER’S OFFICE IN ROANOKE FOR AN AUTOPSY. THE ACCIDENT IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION BY STATE AND FEDERAL AUTHORITIES.
