THE GROUNDBREAKING FOR A NEW JAIL IN CARTER COUNTY APPEARS TO BE CLOSER TO REALITY. A FEDERAL JUDGE ORDERED THE COUNTY TO HAVE A NEW FACILITY BUILT BY JUNE OF LAST YEAR, BUT THAT DIDN’T HAPPEN. COMMISSIONERS MET YESTERDAY AND VOTED TO SPEND NO MORE THAN 26 MILLION ON THE NEW 300 BED LOCKUP. TAXPAYERS ARE GOING TO HAVE TO DIG DEEPER INTO THEIR POCKETS IN ORDER TO PAY FOR THE NEW FACILITY. THE JAIL IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED IN ABOUT A YEAR AND-A-HALF.
