Local and environmental activists are criticizing a report from a federal agency finding that a nuclear processing facility in East Tennessee poses a low cancer risk. At a public meeting held Wednesday, National Nuclear Security Administration officials defended their conclusion that the Nuclear Fuel Services plant in Erwin does not need to update an environmental impact statement on radiation exposure. Officials say the surrounding community is exposed to less than what a person would face in a cross-country plane flight or a single chest X-ray. But Sierra Club member Linda Modica says the 27-page report is skimpy compared to studies done on Department of Energy nuclear sites. The privately owned plant makes nuclear fuel for the U.S. Navy and converts surplus bomb-grade uranium into commercial reactor fuel for the Tennessee Valley Authority.
