The Virginia Department Of Health (Vdh) Is Offering Free Testing For Private Drinking Water Wells Affected By The Recent Flooding In Southwest Virginia. Wells That Were Submerged During The Flooding Event Are At Risk Of Contamination, Even If There Is No Apparent Damage. To Qualify For Testing, Wells Must First Be Disinfected And Flushed. Well Drillers Can Assist With This Process, Or Individuals Can Follow Safety Instructions To Disinfect The Well Themselves. Once Disinfected, Residents Can Request A Free Test Kit By Calling Their Local Health Department.

The Test Kits Include Tools To Test For Total Coliform And E. Coli. Test Results Will Indicate If The Well Is Contaminated. Tests Must Be Returned Monday Through Thursday To A Local Health Department Location In The Cumberland Plateau Or Lenowisco Health Districts By 4 P.M. On The Same Day The Sample Is Taken.
