Unicoi County Sheriff Mike Hensley Has Voiced Concerns About Overcrowding In The County’s Jail, Which Was Built To House Around 62 Inmates But Currently Holds Over 90. Hensley Noted That This Issue Has Been Escalating Since Last Year And That The Tennessee Corrections Institution (TCI) Has Recommended Reducing The Inmate Population And Starting A County Corrections Partnership To Address The Jail’s Needs. While Hensley Has Temporarily Relocated Some Prisoners, He Emphasized The Need For A New Jail, Acknowledging The Significant Cost. In Response, Unicoi Town Mayor Kathy Bullen Stated That The Responsibility For Building A New Jail Lies With The County Commission, Not The Town Of Unicoi.
