Abingdon Town Council Voted To Have The Mount Rogers Planning District Commission Collect The Town’s Cigarette Tax, Beginning October 1. The Decision Allows Town Staff To Focus On Other Tasks. The Tax, 40 Cents Per Pack, Generates Approximately $11,640 Annually. Councilman Wayne Austin Suggested Giving The New System A Year To Evaluate Its Effectiveness. The Change Will Cost The Town A $2,500 Start-Up Fee, With The Commission Receiving 5% Of The Tax Collections.
