NUCLEAR FUEL SERVICES IN ERWIN HAS ASKED THE NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION FOR AN AMENDMENT TO ITS LICENSE. THE CHANGE WILL ALLOW THE COMPANY TO CONVERT LEFTOVER HIGHLY ENRICHED URANIUM FROM CYLINDERS BELONGING TO DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY. ACCORDING TO THE NRC, THE ERWIN FACILITY WANTS TO PROCESS URANIUM HEXAFLUORIDE IN A NEW COMMERICAL DEVELOPMENT LINE. IT WILL THEN BE CONVERTED INTO LOW ENRICHED URANIUM. THE FINAL PRODUCT WILL BE SHIPPED TO NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
