The Carter County Jail Is Facing Problems After Failing A Recent Inspection By The Tennessee Corrections Institute. According To Officials, The Main Reason Was Lack Of Employees Working In The Jail. It Requires A Minimum Of 10 Corrections Officers And Currently There Are Only Three. Sheriff Dexter Lunceford Says The Problem Has Been Escalating For Years Because The County Commission Will Not Increase His Budget Enough To Pay Competitive Wages. The Lockup Has 60 Days To Hire Sufficient Staff Before The Next Inspection. The Department Is Currently Down 34 Employees.
