STARTING JANUARY FIRST, TENNESSEANS WON’T HAVE TO DIG AS DEEP IN THEIR POCKETS FOR GROCERIES. THE STATE’S GROCERY TAX WILL DECREASE BY HALF A PERCENT TO FIVE AND A HALF CENTS PER DOLLAR. FOR A SHOPER WHO SPENDS ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS A WEEK ON GROCERIES DURING THE COURSE OF A YEAR, THAT PERSON WILL SAVE AN EXTRA 23 DOLLARS. LT. GOVENOR RON RAMSEY SAID HIS HOPE IS TO EVENTUALLY CUT THE CURRENT GROCERY TAX IN HALF A LITTEL AT A TIME OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS. ECONOMY WILL LIKELY PLAY A ROLE IN WHETHER OR NOT STATE LEADERS APPROVE FUTURE REDUCTIONS IN THE GROCERY TAX.
