THE WASHINGTON COUNTY VIRGINIA SHERIFF’S OFFICE IS EXTENDING ITS ENFORCEMENT CRACKDOWN THROUGHOUT THE HOLIDAY SEASON. THE INITITATIVE KNOWN AS “DRUNK DRIVING, OVER THE LIMIT, UNDER ARREST” CONSISTS OF INTENSIFIED ENFORCEMENT EFFORTS AGAINST DRUNK DRIVERS. ACCORDING TO SHERIFF FRED NEWMAN, DRUNK DRIVING IS A SEVERE PROBLEM, BOTH LOCALLY AND NATIONALLY. IN 2006, OVER 13-THOUSAND FATALITIES OCCURRED IN CRASHES INVOLVING AT LEAST ONE DRIVER OR MOTORCYCLE RIDER WHO HAD A .08 OR ABOVE BLOOD ALCOHOL CONCENTRATION. THE SHERIFF ADDED THAT THE HOLIDAY SEASON BETWEEN THANKSGIVING AND NEW YEAR’S IS ONE OF THE DEADLIEST AND MOST DANGEROUS TIMES OF THE YEAR DUE TO AN INCREASE IN IMPAIRED DRIVING.
