FOUL PLAY HAS BEEN RULED OUT IN A DEADLY CARTER COUNTY FIRE THAT CLAIMED THE LIVES OF A MOTHER AND HER 5 YEAR OLD AUTISTIC SON. THE MOTHER, MICHELLE HYTER GRINDSTAFF, AND HER SON, ANDREW HAZELWOOD BOTH PERISHED IN THE FIRE ON OSCAR JOHNSON ROAD IN THE HAMPTON COMMUNITY ON MONDAY AFTERNOON. FIRE INVESTIGATORS BELIEVE THE FIRE BEGAN ACCIDENTLY NEAR OR ON A COUCH IN THE LIVING ROOM AREA OF THE RESIDENCE, POSSIBLY FROM A CIGARETTE, INCENSE, OR A MATCH. THE WOMAN’S LITTLE GIRL WAS NEXT DOOR AT THE TIME OF THE BLAZE AND APPARENTLY SAW IT ALL. THE BODIES OF THE VICTIMS HAVE BEEN TAKEN TO THE QUILLEN COLLEGE OF MEDICINE FOR AUTOPSIES.
